Providing a safe and supportive environment for children of all ages and abilities to learn how to skate!
The CanSkate program is geared to beginners of all ages. Whether you are looking to improve basic skating skills for figure skating, hockey, ringette or speed skating, or wish to skate for recreation, fitness or fun, CanSkate will get you there.
Conducted in a fun, friendly environment, the CanSkate program showcases a comprehensive series of balance, control and agility skills, using a nationally-tested and proven curriculum that supports skater success in developing stronger basic skills on the ice.
The Cloverdale Skating Club follows the Skate Canada CanSkate program and has certified Canskate Coaches to teach skating basics with volunteer Program Assistants (PAs) who help our coaches provide more one-on-one support for skaters who need it. Program Assistants are skaters from our Club who have gone through training to learn how to assist with the Canskate program and we are grateful for their participation.
CanSkate skaters are placed into groups based on their current skill level which will be assessed by our coaches during the first week. After the first week, each skater will have a colour group that they join each week. Skaters begin the session with the “fast track” loop and a warm up. After the warm-up, each group completes a series of circuits each session. These circuits are:
Agility - this includes jumps and turns
Balance - forward skating and glides
Control - backwards skating and stops
The session concludes with a 5 minute cool-down and/or fun-zone.
At the end of each session you can expect to receive a personalized report card capturing your child’s progress to date and suggestions for what we will work on in future sessions.
Pre-CanSkate- For skaters aged 3-5 who have never skated and/or are unable to get up or skate unassisted. Skaters may be moved into the CanSkate classes if their skill level is too advanced for Pre-CanSkate. Pre-CanSkate begins after the CanSkate warm-up and ends before the CanSkate cool-down (30 minutes in length)
CanSkate for Teens- For skaters aged 12-18.
Programs will be running out of the Surrey Sport & Leisure Complex for Spring and Summer. Refer to our Schedule page for current and/or upcoming schedule information: https://cloverdaleskatingclub.com/schedule
We can't wait to have you join our skating family!
Please note that all skaters are required to have their own skates and CSA approved helmet. No bike helmets will be permitted on the ice. Skate rentals are not available. Skaters must be at least 3 years of age to register.

Did you know that the figure skaters helping on CanSkate sessions are trained Program Assistants? These volunteers are some of our senior club skaters and work with our CanSkaters to make sure your child has the best experience on the ice as possible! Thank you volunteers!
